Adding Personality to Your Interiors
While many people have lovely homes, do you ever walk into friend or family member’s home and go “wow, I want to know more about this person?” Chances are these are the homes of those who embrace incorporating truly unique, even inspiring items in your home. It’s often these items that let their true personalities shine forth.
Sometimes the touch is subtle, such as shown in the photograph below with the outstretched hand statuette enlivening what would otherwise be a rather usual (but lovely) coffee table vignette.Photography from HabituallyChic.com.
Another way to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary is by showcasing a prized collection. Each of the colorful glassware vessels creates a style statement on their own. However, combining them in a single space takes the impact to a whole new level, as illustrated in designer Lauren Santo Domingo’s New York City loft.Photography from Vogue.com.
The same approach can be used with any collectibles. For example, have you ever wondered what to do with those vintage racquets seen at many yard or even estate sales? Consider making an artistic statement with them on a stairway or in another area of the home, as shown below. These are especially fun for summer time decorating and can easily be replaced with other items when the season changes.Photography from House Beautiful.
Also that unusual item, especially when it’s a find worth showing off, can turn a somewhat monotone display up a notch or two. For example this dramatic head, when mounted on stand, is sure to elicit quite a few glances and comments, as are the statuettes included in the second image below. As these two examples also demonstrate, the inclusion of rare “finds” works especially well when the color is at least complimentary to the overall palette.
One exception, though, may be when the unusual or unexpected is used for more practical purposes. An example is this salvaged set of lockers. Instead of the “expected” bookcase or credenza, these offer stylish storage and make this room truly memorable.Photography from Vosges Paris.
To unexpected and practical add a large dose of whimsy when looking at this next example. Here a vintage toy wagon has been transformed to become an eye catching, yet totally functional, place to keep children’s books organized and easily accessible.Photography from Cory Connor Designs.
The use of the unusual for practical purposes is taken to a whole new level, though, in this metal hippo sculpture which converts to become a truly distinctive bar (also from the New York City home of Lauren Santo Domingo).Photography from Vogue.com.
When it comes to creating a home that immediately conveys your personal sense of style, be brave, be bold. Include items you truly love and enjoy having in your surroundings.
