How It All Began
It’s early Saturday morning in mid-July. Rain is pouring down outside and the wind is howling. It’s a perfect day for pulling the covers up and sleeping the morning away. Not so, though, for Jennifer Friedberg, Way2Finds co-founder and intrepid hunter of all things “interesting” (a word Jenn uses often), unique and, as long-time friends dare to say “often somewhat strange.”
Instead of bemoaning the weather Jennifer is dressed early, yard sale route already mapped, and heading out on the road. “it’s the hunt that drives me, never knowing what I may find at the next yard sale, or the next one…or the next one,” she admits.Photographed by Way2Finds.
The early Saturday (and Sunday too!) forays are actually a routine held over from childhood. “Some of my best memories of time spent with my Dad involve traveling with him and going to antique stores and exploring them,” Jennifer recalls, adding “My Dad would fall in love with an object not necessarily because of what it was but because of its design, craftsmanship and the history or story behind it. That’s the way I look for things today, having learned so much from him.” Wanting to make sure she appreciates, and can recognize the “best of the best” Jennifer also educated herself further through art and photography courses, and of course by visiting countless yard sales, event sales, juried craft shows, museums and interesting homes. (She also will freely admit “I love to shop”, and has her own favorite, and somewhat secret, list of favorite shops.)
As for what makes items, old and new, fascinating to her she immediately talks about the stories behind them. “For older items I want to know how it was made? Who used it? While for the new I’m often intrigued by the thought-process that the designer went through to create it.” Jennifer has a knack for uncovering this information since” I really can talk with, engage with, anyone and they know I enjoy hearing their stories too.”
Of course other important considerations include who the maker was, or the brand, craftsmanship, quality, and condition are important considerations as well. However, she adds, “I know I’m fortunate that I have had the opportunity to really develop an ‘eye” for finding items that other people will find interesting as well.”
With “On the Hunt” Jennifer will be taking Way2Finds friends and customers along with her on her travels. Are you a “hunter” too? Just email here and your adventures may be shared as well.
